Syria: EU sanctions against Bena Properties, Al Mashreq Investment Fund and Hamcho International and the three Iranian commanders of the Revolutionary Guard Corps

Today the European Union unveiled inthe latest sanctions against individuals and companies are involved violence against demonstrators or provide funding for the Syrian regime. The individuals and companies in the annex of Council regulation (EU) 611/2011 will be added to the sanction list of Council regulation 442/2011.

The annex containing the individuals and companies are listed below.

As was leaked to the press three Iranian nationals are included. The connection between the Syrian regime and their counterparts in Iran is now by this made official. The question is how this – the fact that the regime of Bashar al-Assad is using aid, expertise and possibly troops from Iran to kill, main and torture its citizens will effect the its eroding support in Syria, with the Arab League and on the ‘arab street’?

Another issue is how the Syrian business community will react to the these signals from EU? How long before a flagging economy and the threat of sanctions against individual businessmen and their companies will persuade them to switch allegiance? The noose is tightening yet again.

Finally, the questions now is not if but when Turkey will throw its hat into the ring and impose their own sanctions. Wither Syria…
